Connor Hellebuyck Trade Request Hangs Over Jets
Connor Hellebuyck's trade request has swallowed the Winnipeg Jets' whole offseason. And with training camp set for Sept. 16, there's still no trade.
On Aug. 27, 2026, the goalie confirmed through his agent, Ray Petkau, that he asked out months ago (ESPN).
Here's why this one stings for Winnipeg. This is a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, 2020, 2024 and 2025. The Hart Trophy winner as league MVP for 2024-25. The man who backstopped Team USA to Olympic gold in February. And the Jets can't find a deal that works.
Hellebuyck trade request goes public
The statement was polite, which somehow made it worse. Hellebuyck said he made the request "several months ago" and "tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options" (ESPN).
Then came the hard line: "My position has not changed. I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family" (ESPN).
The timing is the tell. He went public because the quiet route died. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff admitted back on June 26 that he was listening to offers, though he wouldn't confirm a request had been made (NHL.com). Everyone in the league knew. The statement just made it impossible to pretend otherwise.
Even the league's own preview concedes the ending. NHL.com's 32-in-32 look at the Jets states plainly that "it doesn't appear he will play out that deal in Winnipeg" (NHL.com).
Why hasn't Winnipeg traded Hellebuyck yet?
As the structure fights them at every turn.
The Athletic reported the Jets "made efforts to accommodate Hellebuyck's trade request. But haven't succeeded on that front," with talks with Buffalo coming closest before the deal died ahead of the 2026 draft in late June (The Athletic). Pro Hockey Rumors put it flatly: "the decision to take the trade public has not translated into a deal" (Pro Hockey Rumors).
Start with the contract.
He signed for seven years and $59.5 million on Oct. 9, 2023, an $8.5 million cap hit that runs through 2030-31. That's five seasons remaining (NHL.com). The Athletic made the obvious comparison: Ullmark got moved with one year left on his deal. Trading a goalie with five years left is a completely different animal (The Athletic).
Now layer on the year he just had.
In 2025-26, the 33-year-old went 23-23-11 with a 2.86 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage in 57 games, a mark Yahoo Sports called a career worst (NHL.com). Any buyer has to ask an uncomfortable question. Are you paying for the 2024-25 Hart winner, or the guy who posted an .895 while the rumors swirled?
And he holds a full no-movement clause through this season, so nothing happens without his sign-off. TSN frames the lingering uncertainty as a real obstacle to the Jets' attempt to climb back into contention. And notes his control makes any trade difficult (TSN).
Where will Connor Hellebuyck get traded?
Buffalo remains the most-discussed fit, with Carolina the only other club firmly connected. And Utah's Mammoth floated as a possibility (Pro Hockey Rumors). Pundit speculation has stretched the list to Florida, Vegas, San Jose and New Jersey (Yahoo Sports).
The one genuine break for Winnipeg: Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports Hellebuyck is open to joining a "variety of teams" (The Athletic).
In an era when stars on Canadian teams increasingly cherry-pick their landing spots, he's not doing that. Credit where it's due. That flexibility is the only real card Cheveldayoff holds.
The quick answers fans are searching for:
Does Hellebuyck have a no-trade clause? A full no-movement clause through 2026-27. It converts to a 10-team no-trade list on July 1, 2027, with unrestricted free agency after 2030-31 (The Athletic).
How long is Hellebuyck's contract? Seven years, $59.5 million total, $8.5 million AAV, signed Oct. 9, 2023. Five seasons left (NHL.com).
What did Cheveldayoff say about the speculation? That it isn't "worth our time in the locker room speculating what's going to happen" (NHL.com).
What to watch at Jets camp
Cheveldayoff wants his room to tune it all out.
Good luck with that. A franchise goalie announcing that leaving is best for his family, then walking into that same room on Sept. 16, is not a story you can locker-room your way past.
The date that actually matters is July 1, 2027, when the full no-movement clause softens into a 10-team list. Until then, the goalie controls the board. And the Jets are negotiating from their knees no matter how calm the GM sounds.
The request started quiet.
It went public since patience ran out, and the silence bought nothing.
So watch the crease in Winnipeg's first preseason game. And listen to whether the questions afterward are about the season or a goodbye.
