NHL 2026-27 Schedule Brings 84-Game Season Back
The NHL 2026-27 schedule is out. And for the first time in decades, the regular season runs 84 games. That is a total of contests across several months, from late September through early April. The league last tried 84 games in the early 90s, when the extra dates came with neutral-site matchups in cities that did not even have teams.
This version fixes something fans actually complained about.
Why the NHL 2026-27 schedule went to 84 games
The old 82-game format left divisional matchups unbalanced.
Some rivals met only three times a season. Fans hated it.
The new CBA changed the math.
Each team plays an equal number of home and away games, with the extra games split as one home and one road against divisional opponents. Every team now faces each of its division rivals multiple times: some at home, some away. Balanced, fair, and guaranteed to feed the rivalries that simmer over six months.
The previous 84-game seasons used neutral-site games in places like Sacramento and Halifax to pad the slate. This time the league kept it simple. More divisional hockey, no gimmicks.
Carolina raises the banner opening night
The Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes raise their banner on opening night against the Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center. Carolina won its second Stanley Cup by beating Vegas in the Final.
Jordan Staal took home the Conn Smythe Trophy at age 37, making him the oldest playoff MVP in league history.
Opening night is loaded. ESPN runs a tripleheader: Florida at Carolina, then the Rangers visit Boston, then Chicago heads to Vegas.

Outdoor games highlight the schedule
Several outdoor games anchor the expanded calendar.
The Heritage Classic comes first: Winnipeg hosts the Canadiens at Princess Auto Stadium in late October. The Winter Classic goes to a team in Utah on New Year's Eve, with Colorado visiting Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The Stadium Series wraps the outdoor slate when the Golden Knights visit the Stars at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The All-Star Game returns to UBS Arena in early February. The event sat out for a couple of years while the 4 Nations Face-Off and the Winter Olympics took its place.

Boxing Day hockey returns, too.
December 26 marks the first NHL action on that date in years, headlined by Montreal hosting Toronto. That alone should get Canadian ratings departments excited.
